A Taste of Italy with Lomonaco Sicilian Cookie Company

Not too sweet and pairs well with coffee – that’s the perfect Italian cookie! At Lomonaco Sicilian Cookie Company, they’ve mastered a generations-old recipe for soft, cake-like Siclian-style cookies.

The word biscotti in Italian means “twice baked,” and is actually a term used to refer to cookies in general, not just those crispy cantucci or cantuccini made for dipping in espresso or a cappuccino.

Many new world Italian companies with family recipes will have a unique spin and Lomonaco’s is no different. Their cake-like cookies are baked just once, not twice like many traditional Italian cookies. The secret ingredient? Well, it’s a secret, but we do know it’s straight from Josie Lomonaco’s mamma herself.

Growing up, Josie Lomonaco always looked forward to holidays and family gatherings because the presence of family and friends guaranteed a plateful of her mom’s classic Italian cookies. As she grew, she learned the family recipe from her mother and fell more and more in love with baking, cooking, and those beloved cookies!

Today, along with her husband, John, and trusted pastry chef Elizabeth Kahny, Lomonaco Sicilian Cookie Company continues the tradition by baking thousands of cookies each year using that same recipe. In fact, they’ve made over half a million cookies in the last three years alone.

Each cookie is handmade, making each one unique. Their almond dough is kneaded and rolled by hand, cut using a special tool, then baked for just 10 minutes. The result? A lightly crisp cookie with a soft center. After baking and cooling, some cookies are topped with homemade frosting and sprinkles for a festive twist.
